That growth is concentrated in advanced manufacturing, defense, clean energy, and robotics, and the job descriptions in those sectors carry very specific vocabulary. Your resume needs to match it precisely.

How ATS Keyword Matching Actually Works

Applicant Tracking Systems do not read your resume the way a human does. They parse it into structured fields and run keyword searches against the criteria the recruiter loaded from the job description. If you wrote “CAD software” but the JD says “SolidWorks,” you may score zero on that requirement — not because you lack the skill, but because the string did not match.

Most enterprise ATS platforms (Workday, Taleo, Greenhouse, iCIMS) score candidates on a weighted keyword model. High-weight terms are typically the ones that appear multiple times in the JD or appear in the required qualifications section. If you hit those terms, your score climbs. If you miss them, you get filtered before a recruiter ever opens your file.

Three rules follow from this:

  1. Use the exact term from the JD. If the posting says “ANSYS Mechanical,” don’t abbreviate it to “ANSYS” alone. If it says “Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T),” include both the spelled-out form and the acronym at least once.

These are the hard competencies pulled directly from engineering JDs. Hiring managers at companies like Lockheed Martin, SpaceX, and Caterpillar are filtering for terms that indicate you can own a design from concept through validation.

  • Tolerance Stack-up Analysis — shows up frequently in precision manufacturing and medical device postings.

Software and Tools

ATS systems scan for exact tool names. Writing “3D CAD software” instead of “SolidWorks” is one of the most common ways qualified candidates get screened out.

The dominant platforms by sector:

  • SolidWorks — dominant in small-to-mid-size product companies, consumer electronics, and medical devices. If you have the Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP), list both.
  • CATIA — standard at aerospace OEMs (Boeing, Airbus, Safran) and Tier 1 automotive suppliers.
  • ANSYS — the leading FEA/CFD suite; specify the module (ANSYS Mechanical, ANSYS Fluent) rather than just the brand name.
  • AutoCAD — still required for 2D drawings in infrastructure, facilities, and legacy manufacturing environments.

Role-Specific ATS Advice by Specialization

Mechanical engineering splits into distinct tracks at the recruiter level, and each track has its own keyword weighting.

Design / Product Engineer: SolidWorks or CATIA is table stakes. GD&T, DFM, DFA, and tolerance analysis are high-weight. Add BOM management, ECO (Engineering Change Order), and PLM software (Windchill, Enovia, Teamcenter) if the JD mentions them.

Structural / Analysis Engineer: FEA solver experience (ANSYS, Nastran/Patran, Abaqus) must be explicit. Mention element types, mesh strategies, and load cases when relevant. Material characterization, fatigue, and fracture mechanics vocabulary matters here.

Manufacturing / Process Engineer: APQP, PPAP, PFMEA, SPC, and Lean are high-frequency. Add CNC, tooling, fixture design, and production ramp experience.

Thermal / Fluids Engineer: CFD software (FLUENT, STAR-CCM+), heat transfer modes (conduction, convection, radiation), and application context (electronics cooling, aerospace thermal protection, HVAC).

CSWP (Certified SolidWorks Professional): Vendor-specific but widely recognized. Some SolidWorks-dependent shops use it as an ATS filter.

Six Sigma Green Belt / Black Belt: Valued in manufacturing and quality roles. Certifying body matters somewhat (ASQ-certified carries more weight than a generic online course).

ASME GD&T Professional Certification: Demonstrates standards-level fluency with Y14.5. Worth more than a generic “GD&T” line on a resume.

Placing Keywords Without Stuffing

The technical skills section is the right place for a clean keyword list — tools, methodologies, and certifications. That section exists specifically for ATS parsing and quick human scanning.

Your experience bullets should not be a keyword dump. Instead, embed keywords naturally in achievement statements. If you used SolidWorks for every job, it does not need to appear in every bullet — once per role in context is sufficient, and once in the skills section ensures ATS capture.

Avoid synonym stacking in a single bullet (“FEA / finite element analysis / structural simulation”). Use the primary form once per sentence. The spelled-out form plus acronym on first use (“Finite Element Analysis (FEA)”) covers both bases cleanly and is the right pattern for any term that has a well-known abbreviation.

When a JD uses a specific phrase — say, “tolerance stack-up analysis” rather than just “tolerance analysis” — mirror that phrasing exactly. That specificity often reflects the tool or methodology the team actually uses, and matching it signals genuine familiarity rather than keyword fishing.

Finally, tailor the order of your skills list to the role. If the posting leads with FEA and thermal analysis, those should appear near the top of your technical skills section, not buried after a list of CAD tools. ATS systems often weight earlier mentions more heavily, and recruiters scanning a skills section read top to bottom.
