Performance marketing is one of the most measurable disciplines in marketing, which is exactly why ATS systems filter for precision. A resume that says “ran paid ads” will lose to one that says “managed $500K Google Ads and Meta Ads budget, reducing CPA by 22% over two quarters.” The keywords and their context both matter. Employment for advertising and marketing professionals is projected to grow 16% from 2024 to 2034 — significantly faster than the average for all occupations — and employers posted more than 376,200 marketing and creative job openings in 2025 alone. Competition is real. Getting your resume past the algorithm is the prerequisite for getting it in front of a human.

How ATS Keyword Matching Works for Performance Marketing Roles

ATS platforms parse your resume into structured fields — skills, job titles, dates, education — and then compare those fields to the job description using keyword matching. Most enterprise-grade systems (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS) do not have full semantic understanding. They are largely looking for string matches. That means “SEM” and “Search Engine Marketing” may score as two different terms. “GA4” and “Google Analytics 4” may not be treated as equivalent.

For performance marketers, this creates three specific risks:

Acronym collapse. This role lives in acronyms: ROAS, CPA, CAC, CTR, CVR, LTV. If the job description spells out “Return on Ad Spend” and your resume only says “ROAS,” you may lose the match. Use both forms at least once: “ROAS (Return on Ad Spend)” in your skills section, then “ROAS” freely throughout your bullets.

Channel specificity. “Paid advertising experience” is not a keyword. “Google Ads,” “Meta Ads,” “LinkedIn Ads,” and “TikTok Ads” are each discrete tokens. List every channel you have hands-on experience managing. A recruiter searching their ATS for candidates who have run LinkedIn Ads campaigns will not find a resume that only says “paid social.”

Tool versions. GA4 replaced Universal Analytics in July 2023. A resume listing “Google Analytics” without specifying GA4 signals an outdated skill set and may miss the keyword match on job descriptions that explicitly require GA4 experience. Same principle applies to platform-specific naming: “Meta Ads Manager” is different from “Facebook Ads” in a parser — use the current name.

What ATS systems do reward: keywords embedded in achievement context. “Managed Meta Ads campaigns” scores better than a standalone “Meta Ads” in a skills list, because context signals legitimacy. Aim to mention each critical keyword in two places: once in the skills section (for exact match), once inside an achievement bullet (for context weight).

These are the channel-specific terms that appear most frequently across performance marketing job descriptions on LinkedIn and Indeed. According to ZipRecruiter, “Google Ads” and “Paid Social Advertising” appear in over 75% of Performance Marketing Manager postings; “Programmatic Advertising” appears in roughly 40%, concentrated in mid-market and enterprise roles.

Paid Search (SEM) — the category term covering all search engine advertising. Use it alongside the specific platform names (Google Ads, Microsoft Ads). Some postings use “SEM” exclusively; others use “paid search.” Include both.

Google Ads — the most universally required platform. Specify campaign types you’ve managed: Search, Shopping, Performance Max, YouTube, Display. “Managed Google Ads campaigns across Search and Performance Max with a combined monthly budget of $80K” is more ATS-effective and more credible than just listing the tool.

Meta Ads — use the current name, not “Facebook Ads.” Meta Ads covers Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Audience Network placements. If you’ve run Advantage+ campaigns or Conversions API (CAPI) implementations, mention them — these are increasingly called out in senior job descriptions.

LinkedIn Ads — particularly important for B2B roles. Hiring managers at SaaS, fintech, and professional services companies will filter for this explicitly. Mention if you’ve run Lead Gen Forms, Conversation Ads, or Thought Leader Ads.

TikTok Ads — emerging requirement in DTC, e-commerce, and consumer app roles. If you have it, list it; many applicants don’t, and it differentiates.

Programmatic Advertising — covers DSP-based buying (DV360, The Trade Desk, Amazon DSP). Appears more frequently in enterprise and agency-side job descriptions. If you’ve managed programmatic spend, be specific about which DSP.

Retargeting — foundational tactic across every channel. Mention the method: pixel-based retargeting, customer list retargeting, dynamic product ads. Quantify where possible: “Built retargeting audiences covering 1.2M site visitors, achieving 3.8x ROAS.”

Demand Generation — the strategic framing for the full funnel from awareness to pipeline. Many B2B performance marketer roles are titled “Demand Generation Manager” — including this term ensures your resume matches those postings even when the title differs from your own.

Performance Max Campaigns — Google’s AI-driven campaign type that spans Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, and Maps. Listed explicitly in a growing number of Google Ads-focused job descriptions. If you’ve run PMax, list it by name.

Analytics & Measurement Keywords

Measurement is the core differentiator for performance marketers. The ability to prove what works — and cut what doesn’t — is what separates this role from general digital marketing. Senior performance marketer roles at companies like DTC brands and growth-stage SaaS startups list measurement skills as primary requirements, not secondary ones.

ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) — the top-line efficiency metric for most performance campaigns. Always quantify: a bullet that says “improved ROAS from 1.8x to 3.4x over six months on a $200K monthly Meta Ads budget” is a resume anchor. Vague ROAS references are weak.

Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) / Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) — CPA is typically channel-specific (the cost to acquire a conversion via one campaign); CAC is company-wide (the blended cost to acquire a paying customer including all channels and overhead). Know the difference and use the right term per context.

Attribution Modeling — one of the most complex and valuable skills in the toolset. Last-click attribution is the default but often misleading; multi-touch models (linear, time-decay, data-driven) give more accurate credit assignment across touchpoints. Mention specific models you’ve built or configured. Incrementality testing (holdout testing) is the gold standard and is explicitly sought at growth-stage companies with mature measurement stacks.

Conversion Tracking — the setup and maintenance of event tracking via Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, or server-side tagging. Many performance marketers undervalue this on their resume; hiring managers at data-driven companies treat it as mandatory. If you’ve implemented Conversions API (CAPI) for Meta or Enhanced Conversions for Google, state it explicitly — these are high-signal differentiators.

Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) — the econometric approach to attribution. Historically an enterprise-only tool, but accessible MMM platforms (Meridian, Robyn, Recast) have made it relevant at mid-market companies. If you’ve worked with MMM outputs to inform budget allocation, include it.

UTM Parameters — the tracking codes appended to campaign URLs. If you’ve built and enforced a UTM taxonomy across channels, that signals organizational maturity and cross-channel measurement discipline.

Testing & Optimization Keywords

The word “optimization” appears in nearly every performance marketer job description. These keywords give it specific meaning.

A/B Testing — headline tests, audience tests, creative tests, landing page tests. Be specific about what you tested and what moved. “A/B tested six ad creative variants across a $30K monthly Meta budget, identifying a video format that reduced CPA by 31%” is a strong bullet. “A/B tested campaigns” is not.

Landing Page Optimization — the conversion layer downstream of the ad. Performance marketers who own end-to-end funnel accountability — ad click through landing page to conversion — are more valuable than those who stop at the click. Mention tools used: Unbounce, Instapage, VWO, Optimizely.

Audience Segmentation / Lookalike Audiences — segmenting campaigns by intent stage, demographic, or behavioral signal. Lookalike audiences (using a seed list of high-LTV customers to find similar prospects) are a core Meta Ads tactic. If you’ve built and optimized these, list them.

Bid Strategy Optimization — manual vs. automated bidding (Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions). The ability to choose the right bidding strategy for a campaign’s maturity and data availability is a measurable skill that affects results directly.

Funnel Analysis / Cohort Analysis — understanding how users move through the acquisition funnel over time, and how different cohorts (users acquired in different periods or via different channels) retain and monetize. These terms appear in performance marketing roles that include retention and LTV components alongside acquisition.

Tools & Platforms Keywords

Performance marketers are evaluated partly by their tool stack. Listing tools without context is weak; mentioning them alongside the business problem they solved is strong. But you still need the tool names present for ATS matching.

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) — the current standard for web analytics, mandatory since UA was sunset. If you’ve set up custom events, Explorations reports, or GA4 → BigQuery exports, mention them. “Built GA4 event taxonomy covering 14 custom conversion events across three product pages” is a differentiating bullet.

Google Tag Manager — the container-based tag management system that lets marketers deploy and update tracking tags without engineering. Mid-level and senior performance marketing roles increasingly expect self-sufficiency here.

Looker Studio (formerly Data Studio) — Google’s free BI and reporting tool, widely used for campaign dashboards. If you’ve built cross-channel performance dashboards pulling from Google Ads, Meta Ads, and GA4, mention it.

Triple Whale / Northbeam — third-party attribution platforms purpose-built for DTC e-commerce brands that have moved away from relying on native ad platform attribution. Their appearance in job descriptions is a strong signal that the company sells physical or digital products direct-to-consumer. If you have experience here, it’s a differentiator.

Supermetrics — data connector that pipelines ad platform data into Google Sheets, BigQuery, or Looker Studio. Common at growth-stage companies that haven’t built custom data infrastructure yet.

AppsFlyer / Adjust — mobile measurement partners (MMPs) for app-install and mobile campaign attribution. Essential for any role involving mobile app growth or user acquisition.

HubSpot — CRM and marketing automation platform, more common in B2B performance marketing roles where the conversion is a lead form rather than a purchase. Mention it if you’ve set up lead scoring, lifecycle stage tracking, or campaign attribution within HubSpot.

Role-Specific Resume Strategy

Performance marketing resumes should follow a results-first structure. Every significant bullet should answer: what did you do, at what scale, and what was the outcome?

Lead with budget and scale. “Managed $1.2M annual paid media budget across Google Ads and Meta Ads” immediately establishes scope. Recruiters scan for this number early. If you’re not comfortable stating a total budget, use monthly or quarterly figures.

Quantify every metric that moved. The metrics that matter most to hiring managers: ROAS, CPA/CAC, conversion rate, revenue or pipeline attributed. If you can connect your campaigns to revenue (“campaigns contributed to $4.2M in attributed pipeline in Q3”), that is the strongest possible signal.

Separate channel management from strategy. There’s a difference between executing campaigns built by someone else and building the channel strategy from scratch. Job descriptions at the manager level and above typically require ownership — make clear which is true in your case.

Tailor the channel list per application. If a posting emphasizes LinkedIn Ads and you have that experience, put it first in your skills list. If it’s a DTC role focused on Meta and TikTok, lead with those. The order in which you list keywords signals relevance to human readers and, in some ATS implementations, affects ranking.

Use OfferFlow’s ATS keyword tool to scan your resume against each specific job description before applying. It identifies missing keywords, flags overused terms, and shows you the match score before a recruiter or algorithm makes that judgment call for you.

The median annual wage for advertising, promotions, and marketing managers was $161,030 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook — performance marketing skills are among the fastest paths to that earning level precisely because the role’s output is directly measurable against business revenue.
