Getting past an Applicant Tracking System as a UX Researcher is more nuanced than it sounds. Hiring managers know the field is full of practitioners who can interview well but struggle to put the right vocabulary on paper. ATS software does not care about your instincts — it scans for specific strings and scores your resume before a human reads a word.

How ATS Keyword Matching Works for UX Researchers
Most enterprise hiring systems — Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS — parse your resume into structured fields, then compare extracted text against a keyword model derived from the job posting. Two things trip up UX Researchers specifically:
Method names are not interchangeable in the system’s eyes. “User research” and “usability testing” are different strings. If a JD says “conduct moderated usability studies” and your resume only says “ran user tests,” the parser may score that as a miss. In bullet points: Weave method names and tool names into achievement statements. “Facilitated 12 moderated usability sessions in UserTesting to evaluate a checkout redesign, surfacing 3 critical flow failures that reduced drop-off by 18%” hits usability testing, UserTesting, and moderated — all in one sentence with a concrete outcome.
In your summary: A 2–3 sentence professional summary at the top of the resume is prime ATS real estate. Use the 4–5 highest-priority keywords from the specific JD you are applying to. Swap this block per application; it takes two minutes and meaningfully improves match scores.

- User interviews — foundational; almost every JD includes this
- Contextual inquiry — differentiates mid-to-senior researchers from entry-level
- Diary studies — signals experience with longitudinal research
- Ethnographic research — valued at companies building for new markets or complex workflows
- Card sorting / tree testing — information architecture work, often required for content-heavy products
- A/B testing — data-informed culture signal; often listed as “preferred” even in qualitative-heavy roles
- Survey design — not just administering surveys but designing them (question types, bias control, scale selection)
- Journey mapping — cross-functional deliverable; signals you can communicate to non-researchers
- Heuristic evaluation — faster audit method; common at agencies and in resource-constrained teams
- Participatory design — co-design with users; shows up in healthcare, civic tech, and accessibility-focused JDs
Where to place them
Do not just list these. Show each in a bullet: “Designed and facilitated 8 contextual inquiry sessions with warehouse workers to identify breakdowns in a newly deployed inventory app, producing a prioritized findings report used by the PM to justify a $200K redesign investment.”
Category 2: Analysis and Synthesis
ATS filters for analytical capability because many researchers collect data well but struggle to generate actionable insights.
- Thematic analysis — the standard qualitative coding approach; name it explicitly
- Affinity mapping / affinity diagramming — same concept, different terminology used by different companies; include both forms
- Jobs-to-Be-Done (JTBD) — product-thinking framework; signals strategic research orientation
- Persona development — deliverable-based keyword; appears in most mid-size company JDs
- Quantitative data analysis and qualitative data analysis — spell both out; they may be parsed separately
- Statistical analysis — relevant if you work with survey data at scale or mixed-methods
- Insight synthesis — the practice of turning raw data into clear recommendations
- Mental model mapping — shows up in enterprise UX and information architecture contexts
How to use them
Pair synthesis keywords with outcomes: “Synthesized findings from 40 diary study entries using thematic analysis in Dovetail, delivering a 12-page insight report that reframed the product team’s understanding of onboarding friction.”
Category 3: Tools and Platforms
Tool keywords are among the most literal ATS filters. A parser looking for “UserTesting” will not match “remote testing platform” as a substitute.

If you have used similar tools but not the exact brand — for example, Maze but not UserTesting — still list what you know accurately, and consider noting adjacent competency in your cover letter. Misrepresenting tool experience will cost you the role after a brief technical screen.
Category 4: Soft Skills and Competencies
These rarely auto-filter, but they are scanned by recruiters and appear in job postings with notable consistency.
- Stakeholder communication — the ability to translate research findings for non-researchers (PMs, engineers, executives)
- Cross-functional collaboration — working across design, product, engineering, marketing simultaneously
- Storytelling with data — not a cliché in this field; the ability to build a compelling narrative from findings is genuinely rare
- Research ethics — IRB protocols, informed consent, participant privacy; critical at companies in health, finance, or handling sensitive user data
- Participant recruitment — screening, incentive management, sourcing from CRM or panels like User Interviews or Respondent.io
- ResearchOps — managing the infrastructure of research (repositories, templates, panels); shows up more in senior JDs
- Workshop facilitation — running design sprints, discovery workshops, or alignment sessions with stakeholders
ATS placement
Soft skills land better in your summary and in bullet points than in a standalone soft skills list. “Led cross-functional discovery workshops with product, engineering, and marketing stakeholders to align on research priorities for Q1” tells a story while landing the keyword.
Category 5: Action Verbs
ATS systems and recruiters both scan for strong active verbs. Weak verbs like “helped,” “assisted,” or “was responsible for” reduce perceived impact and may lower match scores in systems that weight verb strength.
High-signal verbs for UX Researcher resumes, ranked by how commonly they appear in parsed JDs:
- Conducted — primary research verb; use with study types (“conducted 15 semi-structured interviews”)
- Facilitated — usability sessions, workshops, stakeholder reviews
- Synthesized — insight generation from raw qualitative or quantitative data
- Designed — research plans, screeners, survey instruments, protocols
- Mapped — journey maps, mental models, service blueprints
- Evaluated — heuristic reviews, prototype assessments
- Recruited — participant sourcing and screening
- Validated — concept testing, hypothesis validation with data
- Presented — findings to stakeholders; signals communication ability
- Iterated — shows you work in agile, feedback-driven cycles
- Identified — user needs, pain points, behavioral patterns
- Recommended — design recommendations, product strategy input
Replace every instance of “helped,” “worked on,” and “was involved in” with one of these. Every bullet should begin with a past-tense action verb.
Role-Specific ATS Advice for UX Researchers
Tailor per research type. Generative research roles (discovery, strategy-level) weight methods like contextual inquiry, diary studies, and JTBD heavily. Evaluative roles (usability, QA-adjacent) weight moderated testing, heuristic evaluation, and behavioral analytics. Read the JD carefully — the first three bullet points under “Responsibilities” usually reveal which camp the role falls into.
Quantify wherever possible. ATS systems at some companies are now trained to surface candidates who pair keywords with numbers. “8 usability sessions” outperforms “several usability sessions” even at the parsing stage, and it lands better with every human reader too.
Address mixed-methods explicitly. Many senior UX Researcher JDs require “mixed-methods research experience.” That exact phrase — mixed-methods — appears in a significant share of senior-level postings at tech companies. If you have it, say it verbatim in your summary and in at least one bullet.
